I love America enough to work for continued liberty and sovereignty, to preserve for the next generation the inheritance of Western Civilization and the protections of the U.S. Constitution. It is important to remember in all the passion and hyperbole of political opinion, that opinions can change. If bitterness and hate taint our debates, it forecloses the option to reconsider.
It is the Great Lie of the place and time in which we all live that traditional, patriotic and religiously affiliated Americans are ignorant, xenophobic, bigots. It is the Great Lie that conservatives are secretly longing to don bedsheets and persecute the helpless. It’s a lie, too, that we have no compassion for the sufferings of people here and abroad who are not like us, that we reject, revile and hate as the default mode of our collective character. This fictional caricature is now firmly embedded in the American cultural landscape, made vivid and poignant in the public psyche by means of music, literature, education, stage and screen.
These lies have been the most successful strategy of the American left, a self-serving affectation, “We are not just correct in our analysis, in fact, our political affiliation means that we are better people than those who disagree with us.” That is why the left so frequently leaps from issues and solutions to ad hominem attack. They are not just right, they are righteous–and therefore those who seek to thwart them are bad people.
Finally, the radical, Stalinist elements on the left are nursing resentments and volatile hostilities directed against American survival. In the same way that over many years conservatives have beaten down the pernicious weeds of antisemitism and reaction in our turf, our opposites must also, and at once, tend their plot of ground and take heed of the dangers that could overtake our beloved country as a result of neglect. Now is the needed time for a change of heart, to renew the common desire for liberty and justice for all, as Americans who may disagree on solutions but who stand united to face the great challenges of the coming years.
